March 2008Returning Heroes Ball The War is over and it is time for those who fought so bravely on both sides to engage in more social and peaceful pursuits. Join us for an evening of contra-dances, quadrilles, waltzes and polkas accompanied by the live music of "Spare Parts". This Ball will be held at the wonderful Holliston Town Hall, Holliston, MA. (20 minutes from the Massachusetts Turnpike, Framingham exit). Civil War period dress (day or evening, civilian or military) is required for this event. Mid-19th century Newport: After Commodore Perry´s voyage to Japan, Japanese styles influenced western fashions and vice versa. Feel free to wear a kimono or Hapi coat, as long as it´s something you can dance in. Instructor TBA.Mostly social dancing with some teaching. Beginners welcome. $6 per person; students $4. Please join The Elegant Arts Society for a evening of delightful dancing in the style of the 1880s in beautiful Pratt Hall, 311 Temple Street, New Haven, CT. Live music will be provided by Spare Parts with dance precepting by Susan de Guardiola. Dances will include waltzes, polkas, schottisches, the Polo Quadrille, and the "star" cotillion. Scrumptious period refreshments will be served. Costume of the 1880s (ladies, bring your bustles!) is admired but not required; formal dress is requested. Please bring indoor/cleaned shoes to preserve the beautiful floor of the hall. Beginners are welcome. A workshop in New York City March 2nd and also in New Haven the afternoon of the ball. Mostly Waltz, presented by Springstep and Helen Silver, is “a delightful afternoon of waltzing to a wonderful variety of live music, with every third dance another familiar couple dance: polka, one-step, swing, schottische, etc. ” There will be instruction in the basic rotary waltz with simple variations from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. Tom and Barbara Pixton will play for dancing until 5:30 p.m. No partners necessary. Ragtime/Twenties New York: Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon were English, but Manhattan´s Metropolitan Museum of Art provided enormous support for the King Tut expedition and wound up with most of the artifacts that left Egypt. We´ll dance to The Crocodile Fox Trot, Egyptian Ella, Lena from Palasteena, and more. If we're lucky, perhaps Little Egypt will pay us another visit (though of course she's really from Chicago). The Newport Vintage Dance Week is an exceptional week of dance and elegance.
